Rent Free 04:11
Walking down this lonely two-lane highway · The howling wind pelts sand in my eyes · The winter sun burns pale and cold on azure · Another mile between us but I don’t mind · It doesn’t matter how far that my wandering goes · It seems that you’re always with me · And though I get lost and these feet may stray · You’re living in my head rent free · Even when I’m miles away · My favorite storm in any port, that’s certain · That earworm melody playing in my head · Pursuing me until the final curtain · You’ll live in my dreams even when I’m dead
2.
I couldn’t help but notice but your girl has somehow changed · That luminosity she had, now dulled to flickering flame · Hypnotic eyes, alluring smile jaded by your neglect · A tempest is a’brewing and you’re showing disrespect · Awake from hazy slumber and take a second look · Lulled by false security, she’s snared by your hook · Think it over, or her love will fly away · Think it over, before it’s all too late · Think it over, or those luscious lips will stray · You better take some time to think it over · Maybe you have noticed her dispassionate kiss · Silenced voice inside your head you wish you could dismiss · I think you might be taking her a bit too much for granted · Show a little care or soon you’ll be empty-handed
3.
Darkest before the rising sun · Break of day is slow to come · Waning crescent of falling days · Little wonders cease to amaze · It’s only a passing state of mind, a snapshot in the life · It’s only a state of mind, a glancing blow in time · It’s only a state, you can change it if you try · It’s only a state, only a state of mind · Waiting around for nothing at all · Every day it’s the same four walls · Fixtures in your head to rearrange · Open the window and make a change
4.
The cut is deep, the life blood spilt so casually · Pooling scarlet on the floor, sticky sweet ·Tried without a jury with a headlong rush by mob · An exquisite inquisition executed without cause · Rattle the beat of savage drums in wild-eyed pageantry · The unbearable standard hoisted high in the sky · Cancel me if you wish, say that I’m no one · Self-righteous anger your annulment has begun · Overdressed in ragged finery, a shabby masquerade · A strident clamoring charade · All the galloping horses lead the unspeakable parade · But I won’t answer the call of your Grand Crusade · Shatter the stained-glass measure of conventionality · Toxic is the crippling touch, oppressively · Closed-minded prefect, silence all divergent thought · A hollow, hardened heart unable to absolve.
5.
Undone 03:45
Something’s changed, something’s changed, you and I · Something’s gone, something’s gone from you and I · Tell me you don’t see it but it’s right before our eyes · How did we get here? · How did we come undone? · Do you think that it’s all for the best? · Can we learn not to take from the rest? · Tell me you don’t want it · It’s staring you straight in the eyes
6.
Close your eyes, behold unseen reality · Peer beyond the darkened veil of antiquity · Words of kings on tablets hewn in stone · Boast forgotten acts yet fallen from their throne · A city courses with blood, sweat, and sand · Crushing mighty mortals in its hand · Surely the starry skies foretold the signs · Or some prophet of old revealed the Divine · King of Babylon, your deeds transmute to rust · You rule for a day but in time you return to dust · Empires forged in the strength of his prime · Worn away by undulating waves of time · Fevered dream dissipates in the mist · Ancient wonders of the world cease to exist · Did your madness cause you to fall? · Did your matchless pride consume it all?
7.
Driving reckless, devil may swear · Both feet on the gas, but going nowhere · A yellow sign means a fork in the road · Arbitrary choices as life unfolds · And if everything we knew came crashing down · Would your tidy worldview stay the same? · Is everything we see just random · Or is there designed probability? · Can we find some purpose in the chaos? · Can you tell me, what do you believe? · Optimistic naïveté eroded away · Circumstance becomes a mystical mayday · Crisis of identity, diminished belief · Disassociate for sweet relief
8.
Mysterious 03:46
I saw you on the westbound morning train · Exchanged a wistful glance on this wintry day · Was that springtime blooming in your smile? · The blighted morn was warmed with your sunshine · Existential wading through subconscious mist · Buried passion unavowed · Tell me why your eyes are sewn up in a shroud · You’re so mysterious, a swirling, starry night · You’re an experience, Illuminating the sky in full daylight · Ephemeral hopes are fixed as gazes collide · The daily train a chance for a joyride · Your quickening breath betrays what’s on your mind · But is there beauty cloaked behind your eyes? · I’d love to know the treasure of your artistry · Intoxicating fragrance of the chemistry · But asking for your number would spoil the alchemy
9.
Vanity 04:33
Pierce the veil that softens your reality · A low-rent filter of your humanity · Buffoonish me, your persona non grata · Flaunting the lurid scars of your stigmata · How does it feel to be the center of the universe? · Were the stars all hung in the sky just for you? · What is it like to be awash in emptiness? · Couldn’t we stop the dance and let vanity slowly melt away? · Rewire your past and see things differently · Let tomorrow take a break from vanity · Ensnared by the looking glass, you tumbled · Mocked by the reflection, far from humbled
10.
Liberty 04:30
All the king’s nobility enact their wicked ploys · Deals dealt in the darkness, backstabbed with practiced poise · Mortgaging the kingdom a trillion at a time · Pennies for the commoners while on our flesh they dine · And the pendulum swings to greater extremes · While we toil beneath the heavy thumb of the king · Craving that heady rush of liberty · A holiday from the tyranny and strife · Burning for a joyful dance with freedom · That breaks the heavy bonds to live our life · A city long deceived by the town Cryer’s lies · Peddling dissension and conniving to divide · A blade’s-edge twisting of the truth to sever sacred ties · Useless fear is selling out while the deluded haste to buy · Deception or reality, tell me which you prefer? · As the Ministry of Truth spins out tales of the absurd

about

By Light of Day is an Evansville, Indiana-based Alternative/Indie Rock band with a vintage vibe. 12-string jangly guitars fuse with
snarling rock guitars in complex, layered colors on the musical canvas. The music often takes unexpected twists, perhaps starting with a relaxed groove that morphs into a full-on swirling, psychedelic jam. By Light of Day draws inspiration from bands like The Cure, U2, The Church, and R.E.M., all so present and evident in their sonic DNA.

By Light of Day is fronted on vocals and 12-string rhythm guitar by singer/songwriter Brian McMurtry, whose compositions breathe new life into the Indie genre. Josiah Mitchell, the band's lead guitarist, adds a skilled hand to the melodic direction of the band. Daniel McMurtry, the band's bassist, explores new countermelodic opportunities. Dave Matthews, the band's drummer, provides a solid, rhythmic floor that powerfully catapults the band forward.

The band's first album, Beneath the Starry Skies, has been produced by Marty Willson-Piper, veteran guitarist from The Church, playing on standards such as Under the Milky Way. The album has an international flair, as Portugal-based Marty's insightful production technique shines through with well-woven, intricate 12-string guitar parts.
